Helen McSherry

On graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 2000, I began a successful career as a freelance cellist. I lived in Glasgow between 2000 and 2012, working with orchestras throughout Scotland and Ireland including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and The Ulster Orchestra. I also enjoyed success as a recording artist, working with bands such as Belle and Sebastian and Mogwai, and making recordings for documentaries and dramas, including Silent Witness.

I have been dedicated to teaching cello and conducting ensembles for over twenty years and remain passionate about passing on my rich musical experience to the next generation. I taught cello in Belfast Grammar Schools and then in Glasgow, where I worked within several education boards, independent schools and privately, in roles that encompassed teaching, tutoring and conducting.

Since relocating to Cardiff in 2012, I established a fantastic string group in my local primary school, a music based toddler group, a youth group and continue to teach cello privately. As well as working on community and voluntary projects, I have been enjoying my other passion of writing for adults and children; several of my children's poems are to be published by Hogs Back Books.

I have three great children who have a gigantic guinea pig and a girl goldfish! We all love camping and cycling and making as much noise as possible – some of it musical!
