About the Orchestra

Community - Cardiff Young Strings is a community based orchestra for children of all ages and abilities. The cost per session reflects the aim that this opportunity be accessible to everyone.

Vision - The vision behind this exciting initiative is to allow children and young people the opportunity to grow through making music together, whatever stage they are at; to enjoy developing their own musical community and give real purpose to their practice!

Strings only – The orchestra is for strings only: violin, cello, viola and double bass. This makes it possible to focus completely on that special sound and young string player’s needs.

Musical and personal development - Cardiff Young Strings is very much owned by its players. Depending on what each child is comfortable with, there will be opportunity to conduct, present at concerts and perform solos; including pieces currently being worked on with their teachers. There is also scope for the formation of smaller ensembles to allow for further musical and personal development.

Music – We play a wide range of music, with parts arranged to suit all. Programming can be informed by our young players.

The Theatre – Rehearsing weekly in the Theatre at the Gate Arts Centre provides a unique ambiance for playing and building confidence.

Concerts - Cardiff Young Strings will give a concert at the end of each term in the Theatre and there will also be occasion for informal music making in the Café Bar Space.

Parents/carers - Some parents drop off and pick up, others enjoy a bit of ‘me time’ in the lovely Gate Arts Centre Café Bar.

Free first session - This is a fantastic musical opportunity for all! Come along for your free first session.
